Hakuna Kulala is a label from Uganda. Its works have always been keen to express experimental, cultural and electronic elements. What impressed me the most was its hip-hop artist MC Yallah.
Thanks to Hakuna Kulala’s long-standing focus on experimental electronics and underground styles, MC Yallah’s work has become very attractive. Her compositions almost always begin with one or more intriguing experimental sounds that are simple but stand out and leave a lasting impression. MC Yallah’s style is more towards drill, but it also incorporates some Trap elements. Coupled with the experimental electronic sounds and synthesizers of the Hakuna Kulala label, it gives people a darker underground drill feeling, which expresses profoundly. Hakuna Kulala prefers political anger and aggression. This also shows that Hakuna Kulala is “Club explorations from the East African and Congolese Electronic Underground and beyond.” (Hakuna Kulala’s community).
The low frequencies of MC Yallah’s work are really worth exploring. Most of MC Yallah’s works have one or two timbres that keep looping in the mid-to-high frequencies, while the low frequencies are very varied. This is not only the variety of percussion and electric drums, she also added full pad and bass melody in the lower parts. Some low-frequency sounds cooperate with each other, pause and stop, making the whole song dynamic and completely different. Some other songs with experimental electronic elements.
MC Yallah’s works, combined with her voice and lyrics, undoubtedly bring a new listening experience. This is a rebellious style with serious political overtones, which undoubtedly adds a powerful weapon to modern music. Music is inseparable from life, environment, and culture. In some cases, MC Yallah’s work is closer to real life.
